CyrusOne Buys Land for New Data Center Campus in Northern Virginia

Data center developer CyrusOne will continue its expansion in Northern Virginia, buying a 57-acre property to the west of Ashburn's Data Center Alley where it plans a new hyperscale campus.

Data center developer CyrusOne has purchased land to continue its expansion in Loudoun County in Northern Virginia. The company plans a new campus for hyperscale cloud providers and large-scale enterprises on a 75.6 acre property near the intersection of the Dulles Greenway toll road and Belmont Ridge Road in Broadlands, 

The location is about three miles west of Data Center Alley, the Internet network crossroads in Ashburn that has been the focal point of most data center development in the region - as well as power constraints on the Dominion Energy electric grid. The site will diversify CyrusOne's presence in the Loudoun market, where it has clusters of capacity in Sterling and further south near Dulles airport. 

The company has proposed to build five 2-story buildings at the new campus, according to a filing with the Army Corps of Engineers. 

“CyrusOne is excited to expand its investment in Loudoun County where we successfully operate 10 data centers at five campus locations in one of the most important digital gateway markets in the United States,” said Eric Schwartz, the CEO of CyrusOne. “With strong demand in the Northern Virginia market, we are positioned to initiate development consistent with the existing zoning on this new site and deliver world-class digital infrastructure that meet the growing needs of our customers.”

CyrusOne was acquired last year by global investment firm KKR and investor Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) in a $15 billion transaction. In September CyrusOne hired Schwartz, a veteran executive at Equinix, as its new CEO, succeeding company founder Dave Ferdman, who had served as interim President & Chief Executive Officer since July 2021.

CyrusOne operates more than 50 data centers and 4 million square feet of data center space across the globe, working with both hyperscale operators and enterprise customers. The company’s focus on accelerated deployment has helped it reach the very top levels of the data center business. Its digital infrastructure supports nearly 800 customers, including approximately 200 Fortune 1000 companies.
