Driven in part by new regulations, customer demand, and internal stakeholders, a growing number of organizations are recognizing that they have a role to play in mitigating the global climate crisis. Some are reducing the environmental impact of their gas or diesel-powered backup generators with new sources of sustainable power generation.

A new e-book from Kohler examines how sustainable power generation can help balance the need for emergency power with the climate emergency. The report includes discussion of specific steps Kohler is taking to develop optimized and efficient diesel and after-treatment systems. The e-book also evaluates the use of new so-called pathway technologies such a biodiesel. The author explores some of the challenges with these green fuels, including those around storage, stability, corrosiveness and aging.

As a possible alternative to diesel generators, Kohler also outlines the pros and cons of utility scale batteries. This backup power resource is being actively researched by many hyperscale data center operators. They also explore the potential for hydrogen fuel-cell powered generators.
