As big data continues to grow at a rapid pace, many businesses are having to make the decision whether to migrate their data operations to a colocation partner, or keep them on-premises. A new ebook from NTT  Global Data Centers explores this very question, and addresses six top concerns about migrations from on-prem to a colocation data center that come up the most today.

“Data centers are bombarded with products and services daily that promise to magically make your business challenges disappear,” NTT Global Data Centers reports. “And many colocation data centers presented themselves as a cure-all at some point in the past.”

Although colocation data centers are not a fix all, the report points out that they can be worth evaluating, considering the possible benefits your company may enjoy after migrating your data center from on-premise to a colocation facility.

That said, despite the data-backed benefits of colocation data centers, some companies are still resistant to change — and that’s what this new report aims to address.

The report that outlines six common concerns when migrating your data operations to a colocation data center starts off with addressing the following key issue: “I don’t want to give up control.” The report states migrating doesn’t mean you have to give up control.

Instead, “Even after migrating to a colocation data center, you would still have the same amount of control over all the technical aspects of your network performance that you had at your on-premise data center.”

But, what if you are worried about inflexible contract terms? The report contends it is possible to have flexible colocation data center contracts written on your terms.

“Colocation is often used as a replacement for traditional data centers, because it offers higher availability, reliability, certified building tier levels, energy efficiency, dedicated facilities management and the ability to scale.” — Gartner

And although the prospect of migrating your data may seem risky, the report shares this  should be where an experienced colocation data center really “shines”.

“If they have an expert fit-out and deployment services team to handle your move, they will save you time and money,” the report states. “By taking deployment risk, planning, and execution off your plate, you save your internal resources for other projects.”

NTT  Global Data Centers also explores the cost factor of using a colocation data center, and asserts a good colo data center provider can provide economies of scale that clients can’t find elsewhere.
