The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we live, from developments in smart cities, to connected cars and more. And much of what is driving progress within the Internet of Things is data — lots of it.

As a result, the IoT is having an even bigger impact on the data center industry, in particular. For starters, as the volume of data generated by the IoT grows, demand for data centers will grow rapidly, as well. And these centers might look and feel different.

In fact, according to George Slessman, the CEO of IO, “The traditional data center will go the way of the 8-track tape player,” making way for a new breed optimized for machine-to-machine (M2M) workloads and the analytics that mine these oceans of data for business insights.

Data Center Frontier editors and writers are keeping close tabs on this shift as the Internet of Things continues to expand. Here are three stories that lay out big trends in the IoT and how these are impacting the data center industry:

The Internet of Things and Our Data-Driven Future: The Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing are changing modern life. In our new “Data Driven” series, we examine the volume of data generated by the IoT and how it will impact demand for data centers.

Internet of Things Drives Focus on Edge Computing: The Data Center Frontier Executive Roundtable discusses the impact of edge computing and the Internet of Things, and how these trends are influencing how and where data centers are built and deployed.

Smart Cities: A Platform for Urban Transformation: The technology to enable smart cities is close at hand, but political and cultural challenges will take longer to resolve. That was the key takeaway from a Think Tank on smart cities at the Infrastructure Masons Leadership Summit.

The following are some of the top Data Center Frontier stories that drill down into a variety of different IoT topics. Get answers to questions like: How ready is your data center to take on the challenges of IoT? Or learn how the Internet of things will shape the network of the future. Experts like BASELAYER’s Shay Demmons, Chatsworth Products’ Ashish Moondra and  more dissect the changing data center landscape:

How to Enable IoT Connected Devices: How ready is your data center to take on the challenges of IoT? Find out how creating a Connected Infrastructure today, enables you for the IoT platform of tomorrow.

The Internet of Things May Create A New Breed of Data Centers: The Internet of Things will lead to new types of data centers in new places, optimized around the needs of machine-to-machine (M2M) workloads and the analytics that mine these oceans of data for business insights.

How the IoT will Shape the Network of the Future: The Internet of Things (IoT) will generate a tsunami of data, infrastructure experts say, leading to a hybrid network of the future featuring fiber in new places and lots and lots of wireless.

Simplifying Data Center Operation in the Age of IoT: As IoT evolves, managing assets and white space remotely becomes more challenging. A comprehensive and reliable solution that works together to simplify operation, costs and labor, as well as allows for network expansion is key. Ashish Moondra, Senior Product Manager, Power, Electronics & Software, at Chatsworth Products, explores how to simplify data center operation in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Industrial Internet of Things and the Data Center: You’ve heard a lot about the Internet of Things and how mountains of data will soon overwhelm your servers, networks, and data centers. But have you head how the Industrial Internet of Things could change the landscape? Shay Demmons, EVP and General Manager of the RunSmart software division at BASELAYER, explains the ins and outs of this new development.

Supercomputing Moves to the Edge With AI-Guided Drones: Avitas Systems’ drone inspection service is bringing AI data-crunching to remote locations with the NVIDIA DGX Station “supercomputer in a box.”

The Cabinet is Critical to Managing Edge Compute Sites for IoT:  Many edge computing sites could be “unmanned” or “lights out,” requiring a remote management strategy. Ashish Moondra, Senior Product Manager, Power, Electronics & Software, at Chatsworth Products explains white space management of Edge compute sites through a cabinet ecosystem.

High Efficiency Modes of Operation: Path Toward Highest Energy Efficiency Without Load Availability Trade-Off

The most common UPS topology currently used in the industry is double conversion; nevertheless, most UPS suppliers have introduced Eco Modes of operation to further increase the levels of efficiency of the UPS. Download the new paper from Vertiv, which analyzes potential drawbacks of Eco Mode types of operation, further highlights elements to consider when using these modes of operation, and gives a review of field results for technologies like the Liebert Trinergy Cube UPS and more.
