The way in which businesses manage their data has evolved tremendously over time. Gone are the days when servers are located in a corporate office, with all IT assets on-premises. As the cost of data connections decreased, more and more of that data was pushed first to colocation environments, and then to the cloud or hybrid data centers. As Park Place technologies says, “suddenly, the company network was closer to a public network than a traditional corporate one.”

According to their new white paper, digital transformation is a key driver of change in the industry and that “software is in many ways the catalyst that’s enabling digital transformation and introducing disruption to every industry – because IT now has the power to do things that simply weren’t possible without hardware in the past.”

The authors discuss how edge computing, internet of things (IoT), microservices, hybrid IT, and SD-Wan have changed the face of modern IT, as well as the data center network supporting them.

“There must be controls in place to support new infrastructure and network components, as well as ensure availability and performance for the consumption model in question. Simply put, network monitoring is an enabler for accelerating and deploying new technologies.” – Park Place Technologies, “Network Monitoring: The Key to Establishing Data Center Visibility and Embracing New Technologies“

Park Place notes that “the modern data center network is software-defined, converged, and automated” and the network that supports it must also evolve. Network monitoring creates the path for these new software-driven technologies to flourish, according to the authors. With network monitoring IT teams can clarify capacity and performance, as well as ensure successful delivery of new technology. For this reason, the authors challenge technical professionals to look at network monitoring as “rich opportunities for innovation and advancement.”

According to Park Place, “the bottom line is this: the only way to adopt new technologies coherently and defensibly is with strong network monitoring and management.”
