EdgeConneX Continues Global Expansion, Buying Indonesia’s GTN

EdgeConneX said today that it will further expand its presence in Asia with the acquisition of GTN Data Center in Jakarta. Indonesia is a fast-growing market for hyperscale operators.

Indonesia is the next market for EdgeConneX as it continues its global expansion. EdgeConneX said today that it will further expand its presence in Asia with the acquisition of GTN Data Center in Bekasi Cikarang, part of greater Jakarta. Indonesia is a growing data center market, especially for global hyperscale operators who are the largest data center customers.

The deal continues the globalization of the EdgeConneX platform, with began with a network of edge data centers in second-tier cities, and now extends to hyperscale campuses in major markets across the U.S., Europe and Asia. The company’s expansion has been supported by EQT Infrastructure, the global fund which acquired EdgeConneX in 2020.

The expansion into Indonesia follows EdgeConneX’s entry into the India market through a joint venture with AdaniConneX, as well as a strategic investment in Chayora to operate data centers in China. Jakarta will become the ninth market in Asia that is either established or under development.

An Existing Facility, Plus Room to Grow

GTN was established via a joint venture between Japan’s Mitsui and local IT distributor and integrator, PT Multipolar Technology, which is part of Indonesian conglomerate Lippo Group. The deal includes a 7-megawatt, Tier 3 certified data center with 50 customers that has been operating since 2016, and EdgeConneX has also acquired a plot of land directly adjacent to GTN, allowing for a future hyperscale data center campus that could ultimately support more than 90 MWs of capacity.

“Our legacy is being able to successfully and quickly deliver data center infrastructure at the Edge,” said Kelvin Fong, Managing Director (APAC) at EdgeConneX. “As we continue to expand both our Edge and hyperscale data center platform globally, the planned hyperscale data center campus in Jakarta will give us capabilities to meet our customers’ requirements for capacity in this vital and growing market in the APAC region.”

Market analyst Structure Research forecasts Indonesia will reach nearly $650 million in data center business by 2026, with about two-thirds of that coming from hyperscale demand.

“This is a market with tremendous long-term upside,” said Philbert Shih, Founder of Structure Research. “Indonesia has strong demographics, a rapidly rising homegrown technology sector, and is early in the adoption curve when it comes to outsourced infrastructure services like cloud and data centers. “Indonesia, unlike many markets in the world, is home to all the major US and Chinese hyperscale clouds, and this will create incredible volumes of demand for hyperscale data centers.”
