Using Simulation to Validate Cooling Design

Kao Data’s UK data center is designed to sustainably support high performance computing and intensive artificial intelligence. Future Facilities explores how CFD can validated the design, implementation, and operation of their indirect evaporative cooling systems.

The first of UK colocation provider Kao Data’s four planned data centers is designed to sustainably support high performance computing and intensive artificial intelligence. The company was determined that their data center be as energy efficient as possible, so they opted to use an indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) system that would not only be environmentally friendly but more cost effective than a traditional mechanical cooling system.

In this white paper, Future Facilities explores how Kao Data used computational fluid dynamics to validate and make informed decisions around the design, implementation, and operation of their indirect evaporative cooling system. The paper outlines the data center’s specifications and provides an overview of the unique features of IEC systems, which are designed for data center environments.

The paper then explores the reasons why CFD simulation was critical to the success of the project and how they’re currently using simulations.
