Edge Computing: A New Architecture for a Hyperconnected World
Digital infrastructure becomes more important every day. That’s particularly true in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reinforced the importance of reliable low-latency connectivity for a distributed world. By moving infrastructure closer to users, edge computing and architecture allows the compute and content delivery process to happen within 10 milliseconds or less—ultra-low latency that will transform existing applications and lay the groundwork for new ones.
The trends driving the edge computing model are the increased use of consumer mobile devices, especially consumption of video and virtual reality content and the growth of sensors as part of the Internet of Things (IoT).
Edge infrastructure is also a response to emerging technologies—think autonomous vehicles and distributed artificial intelligence (AI) applications — that require low latency and close proximity to users.
For edge computing to be deployed everywhere at scale, it will need to be compact, cheaper and take the network to new places.
This new Data Center Frontier special report, brought to you by Chatsworth Products, explores edge computing and architecture for today’s hyperconnected world.
