Unlike previous object storage solutions that were expensive, complex and proprietary, Cloudian’s vision was to create a system that would allow all sizes and types of users to realize the benefits of object storage systems in their own data centers.

The challenge was clear

Cloudian’s founders saw that data center managers, broadcasters, researchers, and software developers needed solutions to help them contend with the explosive growth in unstructured data. Across all industries – from media, to medical, to industrial – new applications and technologies drove 50 percent annual growth of unstructured data, creating a crisis of storage cost and complexity. An affordable, highly-scalable, easy-to-use object storage system would clearly be the optimal solution to this problem.

An API standard, and limitless scalability

First, a revolutionary new solution required a widely accepted API that software developers would embrace. Fortunately, Amazon established a defacto object storage standard with the S3 storage service. Second, the solution required a highly scalable platform to build on. Cloudian had such a platform. The company’s genesis was in the world of large-scale wireless messaging systems with Gemini Mobile, a leader in the design and deployment of the first mobile messaging platforms used by some of the world’s largest telcos. This object storage platform was launched in 2011 as Cloudian HyperStore.
