If It’s Worth Doing, It’s Worth Measuring: DCIM Infographic

In this week’s Voice of the Industry, Jeff Klaus, Intel’s GM of Data Center Solutions shares a new DCIM infographic on who uses data center infrastructure software and what they use it for.

According to a recent survey coauthored by Intel DCM and Dell, almost half of IT managers don’t fully understand what is happening in their data center. DCIM solutions are key to understanding how data centers are operated, and operated in an efficient way – yet only 53 percent of IT Managers use them. Among other things, DCIM solutions provide critical information about thermal and power usage inside the data center; and from those insights, provide actionable steps to save money.

The survey, summarized by the infographic below, outlines best practices associated with DCIM, including use of power management and power monitoring tools, as well as some common goals IT managers have as to why they’ve implemented DCIM tools, like minimizing costs and being more environmentally responsible. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth measuring – and DCIM offers the easiest way to measure what’s happening “under the hood” of a data center. While 44 percent and 37 percent of IT Managers respectively experience power and cooling issues on a weekly basis, it is clear there is still education needed about the various benefits of DCIM.
